On August 26, 2022, an Ethiopian government airstrike hit a children's playground in Mekelle. According to a doctor at a Mekelle hospital, who later spoke to the Reuters news agency, the airstrike resulted in the tragic loss of at least four civilian lives. Among those killed, 2 were children.
